DESIGN AND INNOVATION CENTRE

SUB THEME- SHELTER FOR ALL

PROJECT INITITIATION

  • The DESIGN INNOVATION CENTRE- Shelter for All (SFA) project got underway from March 17, 2016 following the MoU between SPA, Delhi (Hub) and SPA, Bhopal (Spoke)
  • DESIGN INNOVATION CENTRE- Shelter for All (SFA) project got initiated with the formation of a ten-member team comprising of faculty from Architecture and Planning department of SPA, Bhopal. Dr. Sheuli Mitra, Associate Professor, department of Planning is the Principal Investigator of the Project.
  • The team enjoys expertise in different areas pertinent to Shelter for All, namely, - housing, GIS, product design, urban design, and economics

OBJECTIVES

The project will culminate in the development of innovative products for addressing concerns of the domain of SHELTER FOR ALL through the courses conducted and the projects undertaken. The design innovations target two areas of work which would assist the Urban Local Bodies and other Housing Supply Agencies in decision making to increase the supply of affordable housing. Two decision-making toolkits were identified initially:

  • To design appropriate decision-making tools for better rationalizing the process of identifying new land parcels suitable for different housing segments, through the use of GIS-based technology.
  • To design tools to quantify the contribution of vacant or obsolete or dilapidated premises in the city's developable land pool, with possible mechanisms of redevelopment and reuse in the core city areas.

PROJECT COMPONENTS

To meet the objectives of developing the toolkits, the proposal envisaged the components to be included conforming to the mandate of the project.

Conducting Workshops
  • National workshops with concerned functionaries to fine-tune the prototype of tools developed.
  • International workshops to validate the prototype of tools developed
Developing and Offering Common Pool Elective
  • To develop a common pool elective on the Project Theme and offer it for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across Planning and Architecture Departments of SPA, Bhopal.
Developing Products
  • Students were encouraged to generate multiple ideas in the domain of SHELTER FOR ALL, thereby initiating a culture of innovative thinking in developing solutions for affordable housing. At present, after explorations in many directions, one product has been finalized for development as a prototype, which is in the process of being refined for up-scaling and commercialization.
The toolkit is a RAPID APPRAISAL TOOLKIT FOR HOUSING STOCK IN DEVELOPED CITY AREAS.

SCOPE OF INNOVATION

ABOUT THE TOOLKIT

The Toolkit aims to reduce the barriers in the present system of data capture and representation related to existing housing stock to enable informed decision making by all stakeholders and remove ad hocism in decision making leading to unsuitable transformations occurring. The toolkit can also be used effectively to increase community participation at the ward level and activate the role of the ward committees significantly in shaping the future of their ward. Budget allocation demands can be made in a much more informed manner to the ULB by wards competing for municipal funds and rational decisions can be taken by decision-makers in the ULB with the help of the data captured and data visualization made possible on geo-tagged maps.
